Resvolution: Habits

The Jesus Truth
Plus the Jesus Way
Brings the Jesus Life.

Dallas Willard

There is a common mistake we make. We think Jesus asks us to believe in him, when he actually asks to follow him.

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”

Matthew 7:24

Our January teaching series is all about following the Jesus way: listening to God’s direction for our lives and bedding it down into the fabric of our days and weeks. It’s about fostering the practices that grow us into healthy, mature, fruitful disciples.

Jesus calls us to order our lives after him and his kingdom. To develop the habits, that in develop us.

We struggle with resolutions. We like freedom and spontaneity, but when it comes to ordering our lives the trap that we fall into is seeking to start with being out of the box and unique. We end up using our temperament or personality as an excuse to effectively do nothing.

The better way to develop the habits of discipleship is learn the basics, put them into practice in our lives first. Then once we have learned the basics we can build a unique approach on top.

“Learn the rules like a pro, then you can break them like an artist.”

Pablo Picasso

Jesus says to us, come, learn from me, then develop your own unique take.
As a church we want to encourage you to develop the habits of discipleship. These aren’t the only way to do it, but they are the foundation we want to build in our community. No one accidentally follows after Jesus. It is an intentional act of learning and practice. This month we are going to humble ourselves and learn the basics from the master:

  • Prayer
  • Bible reading
  • Confession and Spiritual Formation (Small Groups)
  • Mission.
